Currently, critical thinking is known to be one of the necessary abilities. It is not only for the present but also for the future time. Indeed, it is very essential both in the world of work and in daily life. We face the reality where information is produced and disseminated so rapidly that impacts perspectives and decisions we make.
I realize that critical thinking is important. Many people have been trapped or deceived by fake news, fraudulent investment or severe hallucinations. We can see the crazy hallucinations as the media were busy a while ago; ‘Keraton Agung Sejagad’ and ‘Sunda Empire’. Aside from economic factors, this deceive phenomenon is also due to the fact that inability of many people to think critically: for instance, question assumptions, reason through logic and analysis conducted.
Critical thinking refers to the competence of analyzing information objectively and stating a reasonable judgment. Therefore, it involves evaluations of sources, such as data, facts, observable phenomena, and research findings. Good critical thinkers can draw reasonable conclusions from a set of information, and discriminate between useful and less useful details to solve problems or make decisions.
Seeing this phenomenon, a few years ago I initiated the formation of the @indonesiaimaji community. A literacy community that invites everyone to read, discuss, and write confidently and bravely. For me, these three activities become significant capital for developing critical thinking skills.
Firstly, by reading, we train ourselves to seek out diversity of thought which will then lead to opened thought. This is important so that as individual it is not easy to get caught up in dogma or become a person who is rigid in responding to various phenomena and information. Secondly, by discussing, we practice for Question assumptions, Communication and of course Open-Mindedness. Based on my observations, there are still so many people who do not dare to express their opinions because they are less practicing and training.
At last, through writing activities, we train to do Analysis, Reason through logic, and also hone Creativity. The advantage of writing compared to merely conveying ideas through word of mouth is that we can double check either the structure or flow of our thoughts is coherent and logical. With the ideas written down, other people can examine and provide criticism so that it is useful for the development to a higher level. After the edits are written, we publish them on the community website.
So far we have done a lot of activities and many people are involved in the community, however, there are still many things that must be improved.
